Fuck it. After the nightmare day she had, Lena needed to blow off some steam. She was going to the god damned Rhubarb Festival. She was going to have strawberry rhubarb pie, have a rhubarb slushy, and maybe even try the very strange sounding rhubarb barbecue ribs.

Rhubarb everything.

She'd stayed until almost dusk with her mama before she was comfortable leaving her on her own. And she took the shotgun home with her and hid it underneath her bed. Then she took a shower and gussied herself right up. She was going to have fun if it killed her.

It might.

In her best boots and her hair Dolly Parton big, she strolled into the center of town, which was only a few blocks from her place. Since she'd always avoided the festival, she was awed by how fun and cute the two blocks that they cordoned off looked. There were pink and red lights, a whole row of booths with all kinds of great smelling food, and weird merchandise for sale.

The part she'd been looking forward to the most was the music tent. She headed straight for it, waving to people and saying hi.

She'd set on her front porch for years and listened to the bands who rolled through every year wishing she could go on down and join them. Well, tonight she was going to. Maybe she'd even get up on stage with them. That would show her mama.

Urgh. Which was not what she wanted to do. Her mama was doing the best she could. Mental illness was a bitch and a half, and Lena knew better than to be mad at her mama for something she couldn't control. Didn't mean it wasn't hard on them both though.

She just needed to have a little fun and let her wild out tonight, and her mother didn't need to be any the wiser. Tomorrow everything would be right as rain. She popped into the back of the music tent and one of her many cousins or cousins of cousins twice removed, or whatever they were, waved her over to their table.

“Hey, have you seen Dixie Sue around?” she asked. “She hasn't popped yet, has she?”

Dix had been excited about the rhubarb festival for weeks. Said she'd been craving the rhubarb ribs and the pies something fierce. Her side of the Walker family always had a booth with old timey remedies and such made from the mountain crop. Just the other day, she'd been going on about how they wouldn't let her have any to curb her cravings because they needed it for their tinctures and creams. Maybe she was over working the booth. Lena would check after she sang her song.

“Nope. Haven't seen her for days. She's nowhere to be found.”

Yikes. “I hope she's alright.”

“You know Walker Valley. We'd all know if there was something wrong.” Her cousin tapped her forehead indicating the idea that Walkers had some kind of sixth sense or something. Lena had never put much credence in the stories of some of her ancestors being mountain witches.
